'He snaps, but never bites'

Check out the story and video links below from The New York Times.

They both feature Patrick McMullan, New York's top party photographer. As the story says, he is a former Studio 54 party boy turned society chronicler who for three decades has photographed everyone from Upper East Side society matrons to downtown night crawlers and club freaks.

Road Trip

Here, my dad attempts to hide behind a cloud of smoke while I take his picture.

Children ride on the merry-go-round at an Illinois mall.

This weekend, my family and I took a rode trip to Champaign, Illinois for my cousin's wedding. I used this opportunity to take as many pictures as I could. I apologize for the grainy look, as I had to keep a distance, out of respect for the bride and groom. Aside from the quality, I tried to remember the rule of thirds, and also capture emotion.

Here is a picture of the bride and groom; Elisa & Howard Ransom

I recently found this website. It has interesting articles and news to help keep you updated on what's going on in the world of photography. It also talks a lot about equipment, which I think is helpful.

I don't know how to make it link or anything, sorry.

Mark Hickman and Zach Long seniors at Gardner Edgerton High School team up on the opposite team as they take part in the school dodge ball tournament.
I know my photos need cropped but I am at my husbands parents and due to the computer programs they have I could not get it to save the crop.

White House photographers revolt

Interesting story on the Columbia Journalism Review Web site involving Pete Souza, former Kansan and official White House photographer.

In 2005, the White House News Photographers staged a mini-revolt because the Bush administration was shutting them out of events and instead supplying them with shots from an official photographer. The administration relented.

But it's happening again under Obama, and the official photographer was one of the leaders of the 2005 insurrection.

A real old Groucho

This is one of the photos I'm using as a section cover in my book that will be out soon. This section is about people who have died, and I have a column about them in the book.

This is my grandmother, Marie, who lived to be about 101 1/2. As you can tell from this photo, she had a great sense of humor. I just wished I'd have had a cigar handy for her to hold.

She was a teetotaler, but I got her to drink a beer when she was in her late 90s. "Pretty good," she told me.

My mother and some of my aunts (she had seven daughters) were mad at me for letting/getting her to try alcohol for the first time. My grandfather would have loved it.

Campus Shot

Brandon McMillen, a freshman in education at WSU, lines up for a shot during a game of snooker in the billiards room of the Rhatigan Student Center. Snooker is a game played with the standard pool balls, accompanied by several additional solid red balls. The objective is to first shoot a red ball into the pocket for one point, and then receive the chance at shooting at one of the numbered balls to receive the same number of points as the number assigned to the ball. The red ball does not return to the table, while the numbered ball is placed back onto the table. Once all of the red balls are gone, the players shoot out the remaining numbered balls, and the player with the most points at the end of the game wins. The game can be very time consuming. McMillen visits the RSC two to four times a week to play a number of assorted billiard games.

As Spring approaches (eventually, hopefully) I'm guessing we'll all be taking a lot of nature/landscape photos. Here's some direction from Kodak.

What the Still Photo Does Best

Atlanta —Charles Moore was a news photographer who became a photojournalist and died a visual journalist — not because he changed, but because the technology, nomenclature and just about everything else involving his profession did.

Take a few moments to read this story about a legendary photojournalist, and check out some of the related photos, slideshows and stories.

NPPA Photojournalism Contest Winners

The NPPA has posted the winners of its annual photojournalism contest. From the link below, you can click on the different contest categories and see the winners, plus other entries. Some of them are quite incredible and it's easy to see why they were chosen. A lot of what we have learned this semester is featured in the photos. We can also get an idea of how photojournalists think and see. Go check it out!

Student Profile Pics

Here are a few of the pictures that I took for the campus package piece that we had to turn in before Spring Break. This is Brian Simpson, a WSU student who is majoring in music and engineering. I think these pictures turned out pretty good and the angles are interesting. I like how the motion was captured in the third picture. Also, the last photo clearly has some photoshop work done to it, but I think the black and white along with the other effects make the picture look cool. Hopefully I'm allowed to post a photoshopped picture on here....

Nassau, Bahamas!

This is a photo of my sister on the beach in Nassau, The Bahamas over spring break.
I did do a little contrast changing on the picture, but in my opinion its for the better.

Alfred Eisenstaedt

Bobbi Baker Burrows continually referred to the work of Alfred Eisenstaedt during her discussion with us. She spoke of how wonderful of a photographer he had been and the array of events he had captured in photographs. I took some time to learn a little more about this photographer and look at some of the additional work he had achieved. This website is a tribute to his work, naming him the Photojournalist of the Century. Take some time to delve deeper into the world viewed by this man, through the images he created.

Maria Mannani-WSU Action shot

I randomly took photos of students on campus the other day.
I decided to photograph this guy, because he seemed really into what he was working on with his laptop, so he wasn't easily distracted.
This is Daniel Dyke, a senior who is studying engineering at WSU. He was working on his senior design project.
I chose this photo because Daniel is off-center and the lighting in the back looks dim in comparison to Daniel. It kind of makes himm and his laptop "pop" in the photo.

Maria Mannani-Photo Resource

Most of these photos have wonderful composition, good lighting, and bright colors. They're very attention-getting. Obviously, they look tasty, too!

This link is for a guy that I work for. I do weddings with him during wedding season and I think he has some really cool pictures of weddings and children. I think you can get some ideas for when you have to go out and shoot people and not just do the same thing over and over just taking a picture of the person standing or sitting. You can make it a little more interesting. Take a look. www.gpsphotography.biz

Death And Dying

This is Kelli Frazier. She is a teacher at Pleasant Valley Middle School who is dealing with her second bout of cancer, but this time it's not curable. Her story was very interesting and I enjoyed sitting down and talking with her. I wish I could've gotten a chance to take pictures of her while she was teaching, but I was unable to. I chose to post the first two pictures because I felt like they captured good emotion. She got fairly emotional when explaining to us about her condition and how it isn't curable. I took the first two pics during that time and I feel they captured her feelings pretty well. As we continued to talk to Kelli, she remained positive about the whole situation and told us how she is making the best of it. She explained to us that it has helped her embrace what is truly valuable in her life and that she is always looking up. That being said, I posted the third picture because I feel like it captured that emotion. I like the the third picture because she looks inspired and strong. And if you make the picture bigger there's a nice gleam in her eye that I really like.
